Bushwick Inlet Park

Bushwick Inlet Park will encompass 28 waterfront acres (from N9th to Quay Sts., adjacent to the existing State Park).

Park Projects

The conceptual plan for Bushwick Inlet Park calls for a variety of active and passive recreation, including soccer and softball fields, volleyball courts, a central lawn, beach area, picnic area, bird and wetland gardens, a boat house and boat launch, community meeting space, vistors' center, Monitor Museum, bike and pedestrian walkways, dogrun, and other amenities.

Schematic plans for the parcel from N9 - N10th Sts. were presented to Community Board #1 and are now undergoing review by the Art Commission. This site is expected to go into first phase construction in 2009, to build a soccer field.

With second phase construction (towards Kent Ave.), the ground will be sloped upwards, and underneath the grass hill, a building will provide community meeting spaces (that can be flexibly combined for large events), exhibition space, a food warming area for catered events and the regional offices for the Parks Dept.

The progressive architectural plans utilize state of the art sustainability practices: nearly complete self-generating power with solar photovoltaic cells, sunlit rooms to decrease energy consumption, green roof to increase energy efficiency and provide environmental benefits, gray water re-use, natural remediation of run-off water before returning to the river, and other measures.

Additional parcels for the Bushwick Inlet Park are awaiting the relocation of existing businesses, undergoing environmental contamination testing and in legal dispute.

The Bushwick Inlet Park includes a parcel (between N12-N13th Sts.) where Trans Gas Energy (TGE) has an option to build a power plant. For seven years, the Williamsburg/Greenpoint community has fought against having a power plant at this location. In March 2008, the NY State Board on Electrical Generation and Siting denied TGE's application, however, in April 2008, TGE formally requested a rehearing, and announced that it will appeal the decision. Our city waterfront park and our community await the final determination.
